THE
LAND GATE
At the foot of the Palamidi next to the bus station you
will find the Land Gate or Pili Tis Ksiras as it’s called
in Greek.
Originally built in the early 1700's it was the only entrance
by land into the "Old City".
In front of the entrance was a seawater moat crossed over
by a wooden drawbridge. After sunset the gate would be locked
and guarded.
Most of the gate you see now has been reconstructed after
extensive study and a few of the original remnants are still
there, including the Venetian symbol, a statue of a wingless
and tailless stone lion and Commander Griminis' family crest
dating to the year of construction of the gate in 1708.
