ARGOS
At
the centre of this bustling modern town you will find St
Peters Cathedral located in a large square of the same
name. Nowadays Argos is more known for its' industry,
residence and commerce rather than the glory of its'
splendid and powerful past. Playing a key role in the
history of the Argolis area it was once up on a time the
dominant power even before Mycenae.
Unfortunately due to there being no town planning a lot
of its' wonderful past is still buried under many of
its' modern apartment blocks.
Taking this a side just a few metres away from the
centre you will find the Ancient Theatre and the Roman
Baths and Roman Agora. On entering the site on one side
you will walk down a Roman Street whilst in front of you
is the dominating Theatre.
Dating back earlier than the Theatre of Epidavros and
being larger (seating 20,000 to Epidavros 14,000), the
theatre was cut out of the limestone rock.
Crossing over the other side you will see remnants of
the Roman Agora (market place), here you are allowed to
explore the ruins up close but beware as there are no
footpaths. The small but interesting museum of Argos
houses some wonderful mosaics excavated from the ancient
site.
The
ancient theatre and the town of Argos are dominated over
by the Venetian fortress high up on the Larissa hill. |
